Cadillac is well known for its shitty CUE infotainment interface and shitty capacitive dashboard buttons that aren’t actually buttons. Cadillac president Johan de Nysschen recently told a journalist !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Um, that’s not the only problem in your cars’ dashboards, Johan.

The exact words de Nysschen spoke about Apple CarPlay are:

“There are a lot of things about this product I like, and other things that drive me absolutely nuts. It can bring a lot of functionality in the car, but I will also tell you it is extremely clunky. Apple map data is still at the early stage. It was not originally conceived for a vehicle traveling at 75 miles per hour. Like when it says turn left here—at the off ramp you have passed. That kind of stuff will need further work. There should be seamless switching of apps like Pandora or iHeart Radio. It doesn’t always really work that smoothly. I don’t know if Apple is doing it deliberately or not, but I’m calling them out.”

For reference, here is a walkthrough of the latest Cadillac dashboard controls, in a CTS-V.

Most of the interactions with the screen are ok, fine, it works, but the very first thing the lady in the video points out is the shitty capacitive buttons. It’s almost as if you could describe them with the following words:

“There are a lot of things about this product I like, and other things that drive me absolutely nuts. It can bring a lot of functionality in the car, but I will also tell you it is extremely clunky.”

Come on, Johan.

I’ve driven a bunch of new Caddys, and they’re wonderful drivers cars - but man, that CUE SUCKS!!

he’s not wrong about the maps thing, though; both CarPlay and Android Auto have done that to me.

Well sure, but it’s just funny that he’s calling out Apple when everyone hates those damn capacitive buttons.

My opinion from the Detroit auto show: Veloster has a better interior than the ATS-V.

We have CarPlay in our Tahoe and it is pretty disappointing. Most of the time I just use the Chevy MyLink interface, even though it’s so ugly to look at.

Based on my experience, FCA has the best in-car user interface with the higher level UConnect systems.

But yeah, shitting on CarPlay when CUE is such a steaming pile doesn’t make much sense.

He’s just mad that the “CarPlay” name is so logical. It needs to be Apple XGT90t to earn his respect.

Yes, that is your legacy in the industry, Johann. Stupid car names.

We have CarPlay in my wife’s Sorento - he’s right that the maps don’t work as well as native navigation systems, like the one on my S3. However, the map in CarPlay hasn’t ever told me that I’m driving through a field, like the non-updated map in my navigation.

Frankly, my biggest gripe with CarPlay is that it doesn’t automatically dim the map at night. I haven’t done any research into trying to figure that out, because there must be a way to make that work properly.

We use CarPlay in our Sedona. I like it. It has the functionality I want easy at hand. Maps hasn’t let me down recently. The last time it gave me trouble was giving directions in downtown Houston a few years ago (no CarPlay then), when it couldn’t keep up with the changing city blocks. These days it works great.

I’m on the Android bandwagon but have yet to try Google Maps or Waze in a car with Android Auto. I prefer Google Maps over the built-in navigation in both my wife’s 2016 Impreza and my 2011 335xi. Even though the maps in both cars are up to date.

Wouldn’t this depend on the hardware in the car itself? Apple and Google Maps existed for navigation before Carplay/AA and people used them just fine as far as I can tell?

We have CarPlay/AA on an aftermarket Pioneer unit we bought for our Crosstrek in like 2015, so nothing new or flashy at this point. Never noticed any instances of it lagging behind where we actually are on the map.

I think AA is far more usable than CarPlay, but any lag between what your phone would’ve navigated as a stand-alone unit and what you’re seeing on your screen is probably a function more of your stereo unit itself, and maybe your phone not being able to keep up with the added workload than the software itself?

So what you’re saying is, maybe CarPlay is only shitty in Cadillacs because Cadillac infotainment screens are shitty?
